How do I get my speaker system to sound right?

I bought a set of Boston Digital Acoustic Speakers, model BA735. When I plug in my mp3 player the sound goes in and out. I would guess something's wrong with the jack you put into the mp3 player. Can anyone help me with this? I'd greatly appreciate it.

do headphones work in your mp3 player ? if so the jack isnt your problem.

the (grown) connection from your headphones jack is disconnect
